Congratulations Class of 2018! These young men and women work extremely hard for four years, and now the celebration begins.
Colorado Springs is home to the United States Air Force Academy, and we get front row seats to one of our favorite events of the year- the flyover and air show put on by the Air Force Thunderbirds. This year’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for Wednesday, May 23. The ceremony starts at 9:30 am.
Typical schedule for the week of the United States Air Force Academy graduation for the AF Thunderbirds (based on my observation from the previous years):
- Monday- the Thunderbirds arrive into town and you will see them practicing
- Tuesday- Rehearsal of the entire air show that will be performed on Wednesday (usually mid morning)
- Wednesday- Flyover and Air Show following the graduation of the cadets at the USAFA (somewhere between 12pm and 1 pm depending on how long the ceremony takes)
WHERE TO WATCH:
Luckily you will see the Thunderbirds from just about anywhere if you’re on the north end of Colorado Springs or in Monument (the closer to the USAFA the better).
Some of our favorite places to watch the AF Thunderbirds: New Life Church parking lot (typically open to the public), the parking lot in front of Colorado Mountain Brewery (Interquest location), Mary Kyer Park (a little set back but they will fly over several times). Here is what the view looks like from Colorado Mountain Brewery (from the practice for 2017) and from Mary Kyer Park.
My 5 year got this Thunderbird toy last Christmas that he just loves and he’s so excited to have with him this year as we watch the Thunderbirds!
