Colorado Campground is close to Woodland park, CO, and a great spot for camping with kids. It is only about 10 minutes from Woodland Park, and about 1 hour from Colorado Springs or South Denver. Because of that it is VERY popular. I was told by the camp host that all spots on the weekends were reserved in May for the entire summer!
There are walk-in only spots but if you are going on a weekend you need to get there early. HOWEVER, on a week day if you can sneak away from work, we had the place practically to ourselves. Maybe 10 other campsites total had people in it on a Monday night.
It is a large campground (nearly 80 spots) most of which can handle campers, tents, or RV’s. It is near several other campgrounds all centered by Manitou Lake. Manitou Lake is a really nice family friendly lake that has fishing, wildlife viewing, and allows non-motorized boats. The lake has a pavilion, picnic tables with grills, two little piers, and bathrooms.
The appeal of Colorado Campground is you can walk on the VERY short path into the lake area. There is no camping on the lake, so this is the closest spot. However, even if you want to drive, campers get to go the lake for free included in the camping fee. This is nice, since the lake is $6 per day otherwise. We did fishing, and just took in the sights.
The actual campground has lots of bathrooms, drinking water, and trash all throughout the site. Each site has a fire pit, table, parking area, and tent/camper area. This part of Colorado can get storms and tends to be a little colder, so we did have some storms, but it was ok. At one point we retreated to the car but it was fine.
Like all “public” camping sites in Colorado, sometimes the price you pay is the company. If you prefer people around, this is a great spot. If you prefer to be alone but not isolated then this is great on the weekdays. If other people whose view of camping is TV in the RV, loud music, and way too much drinking is not appealing to you, I’d stay away on the weekends, or find something more remote.
Bonus, it’s so close to Woodland Park that if you want to go to one of their great parks, or just need some supplies it’s very easy. We went before dinner to kill some time at the big park at the elementary school, and it was probably the kids’ favorite part!
